Golgafrincham, you sound like you have some kind of vested interest in BetAngel. Is that not the case? BetAngel seems like a decent application to me but the price is steep when you consider what Layit provides in the way of functionality for nothing. I don't pretend to fully understand his motives for so doing but the fact remains that a free product can generate X times more interest than a commercial one. Seems that way to me, and as I have attempted to make clear in the past - I'm just an observer in all this.

Golga, I strongly disagree that a free piece of software cannot be up to the same standard as a paid one. Layits priogram puts some of the so called paid programs to shame. Obviously the program is as is and you use it at your own risk but I sincerely believe that its as good as Bet Angel Pro in the functionalities that the two have in common.

Golgafrincham, further to what I originally wrote I am agreed that an application that uses the Betfair API will as a rule offer higher stability and lower risk than one that scrapes the web-page. Therefore I'm with you with respect to this consideration but like another person said I don't agree that just because an application is free it is inherently lacking in some way.

have you heard of linux? the majority of internet traffic passes over servers running the linux operating system.
linux is freeware, but offers a better service than any Microsoft Windows operating system, and is used by the largest blue chips in the world.

MeanOldLiar, I'm fed up of you accusing me on every thread of having a vested interest. What's yours? I use STW, Autobet (though I should say have used in this case) and Bet Angel and have played around with Gary's software but I wouldn't consider using it seriously its just not a commercial application in my eyes. I am a serious trader and need the best platform possible and using some free that has been cobbled together by somebody with no obvious motive is not credible. I'd be interested to know where Gary is taking this it seems odd that somebody would spend so much time developing something if he had no incentive to maintain it. We all need to eat don't we? If the motive is purely to practise programming skills then I don't consider that viable as a platform.

Re Linux if you can find me a Linux programmer or technician that will work for free at my call then please send them over to me. I would align linux to the Betfair API not any software that runs off it.

I know this views will be unpopular with a number of posters on here but you shouldn't take offence.

Golgafrincham, the point is that you sound like you're promoting BetAngel. If you want to do that "for nothing" then we meet with a supreme irony do we not?

However, if you're simply a user of this software then you must really be blown away by it because you keep singing its praises. Problem is - if it's that good - then why attempt to defend the indefensible with respect to commercial software and freeware? I mean why bother? I can see no motive.

I don't want to turn this into an argument. I put it to you that an application which utilises the Betfair API is in all likelihood the superior product, which is probably therefore going to be a commercial application.

I don't understand that statement are you saying because Bet Angel, STW and Marketfeeder et al use the API they are superior products? Don't understand your point?

Also, I'm agreed that if you're trading large amounts then a Beta is no good for this - you're better off with a commercial release so I'm not all against your arguments. However, the freeware versus commercial argument isn't going down very well here IMO. I'm all for LayIt's program by the way - gives the makers of commercial software something to think about.

The point being that they are more likely to be a better product than ones that don't utilise the API. Any one of them.

I am sorry if I offended you, but the way it is written makes it look like that and I refer to one of your first posts on this thread. In which you refer to your lack of experiance on VB.Net and which you say explain one of your motives: -

"LayItYouMug 24 Mar 12:56

unlucky_alf. Of course they could. You'll just have to take my word for it that the program will not be spying on you.

Here are my motives:-

1. I've just changed jobs and am required to use VB.NET. An ideal way of learning it is to write a program to help me with my betting (two birds with one stone). "

Hey everybody, I didn't come on here to row but it seems the nature of public forums is that discussions seem to de-generate when a debate starts. I don't know why this is. I use the software so all I was doing was passing comment. Lets move the discussion on please.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
